Exemptions

1. May I know why am I only exempted from 1 GE course? I have friends with similar qualifications but they are exempted from 2 GE courses.

Exemptions for freshmen are normally granted by the Dean’s Office prior to the commencement of SMU studies. Depending on the grades attained, students holding the same qualifications may be granted different exemptions.

For more information, please refer to the exemption criteria. Kindly contact your School should you require further clarifications.

2. I am exempted from 3 course units for GE based on my GCE A Level results: A in both Physics and Geography. Referring to the exemption criteria, I should be exempted from 2 CUs for each subject. Is there an error?

The total number of exemptions that may be granted to any student in the area of General Education is capped at 3 course units. For more information, please refer to the exemption criteria. Kindly contact your School should you require further clarifications.

3. I have completed my internship/ industrial attachment during my polytechnic studies. How can I apply for internship exemption?

Exemption for Internship (partial or full) may be granted to polytechnic students (only) if they have completed a relevant business attachment during their polytechnic study.

Such exemptions are not automatically granted. Polytechnic students should be advised to submit a copy of their internship certificate as well as supporting documents on the job scope to the Dean’s Office for evaluation.

Note:

  1. SIS and SOL do not grant exemption for Internship.
  2. No exemption for Community Service should be granted.
4. I have graduated from a local polytechnic with a Diploma with Merit. However, it indicates otherwise in OASIS. How can I rectify this?

You will have to submit your Merit Certificate to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Once your records have been updated, your exemptions will be re-evaluated.
