Optional Waiver Test for Statistics

Note: Candidates must report to their designated venue by 9.15am. Latecomers will not be allowed to enter the examination room after 10.00am.

Objective

The purpose of the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics is to identify students who have the requisite knowledge and skills in probability and statistics to critically analyse and interpret data. If you passed the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics, you will receive an exemption from STAT101 Introductory Statistics, on the condition that you have already been granted exemption from MATH001 Calculus. Please note that the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics does not provide exemption from STAT151 Introduction to Statistical Theory.

The Optional Waiver Test for Statistics is conducted once before the commencement of Term 1 of each academic year.

For Who

  1. Open to all freshmen students only (optional).
  2. BSc (Econ) students should not take the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics as they are required to take STAT151 Introduction to Statistical Theory which the Waiver Test does not exempt them from.
  3. Students who intend to declare Applied Statistics, Actuarial Science or Quantitative Finance as second major should not take the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics.
  4. Students who intend to enrol in BSc (Econ) as a secondary degree should not take the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics.
 

 For LLB students who want to take on a second major in Finance/ Finance with track, must meet the following foundation requirements:

  1. Introductory Statistics (can be waived by passing the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics, this test is a one-off event) or Introduction to Statistical Theory
  2. Introductory Economics (can be waived subject to exemption rules).
  3. Students admitted in AY2013-14 onwards have to obtain a minimum grade of B- for FNCE101 Finance* or FNCE102 Financial Instruments, Institutions & Markets.  LLB students can choose to take FNCE 101 Finance* or FNCE 103 Finance for Law. They have to obtain a minimum grade of A- for FNCE 103 Finance for Law.

 *Note: Students enrolled in LLB and BBM or BAcc double degree programmes are required to take FNCE101.

Content

The Test will consist of entirely multiple-choice questions. Programmable calculators with no transmission device are allowed for the test. Please login to OASIS Home > My Checklists > Optional Waiver Test for Statistics after you have matriculated online and activated your SMU Computer Account to navigate to the list of topics, formulae and other useful details. No further information about the syllabus of the test will be provided.

Registration

To register for the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics, please login to OASIS > Home > My Checklists > Optional Waiver Test for Statistics after you have matriculated online and activated your SMU Computer Account. Online registration starts on 2 June 2017 and closes on 14 June 2017 at 1.30pm. Your designated venue for the Test will be sent to your SMU email account upon successful registration and receipt of registration fee.

PaymentA non-refundable registration fee of S$25.00 will be charged for the Optional Waiver Test for Statistics. Payment is to be made in cheque / NETS / credit card (Visa/Mastercard) only, starting from 6 June – 14 June 2017 at:
