School of Law

Dean, School of Law

Dear Students,

My colleagues and I welcome to you to begin a new chapter with the SMU School of Law. You are our 11th cohort of undergraduates, and the first to commence your studies in the new School of Law Building and the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library. You will be able to take advantage of our new David Marshall Moot Court and other modern teaching and project rooms.

You will find the study of law to be demanding. It is not just about learning rules. It is about the acquisition of the skills of legal reasoning, research, argumentation, and writing. Learning to be a good lawyer further requires understanding of the social, economic and political contexts in which laws operate to regulate as well as to serve society and its institutions and members. It takes tremendous effort and practice to learn to think like good lawyers.

You will have to read and analyse copious materials. You need to manage your time as you juggle your self-learning, group assignments and other demands on you. You will also find your time in law school to be exciting. You will have many opportunities to expand your horizon through extra-curricular activities, global exposure, internship and community service (including pro bono legal work), and of course your own social life. It is of course important to get good grades, but ultimately it will be the legal and life skills that you hone over the years as a law student and which you bring to bear on your work that will determine the trajectory of your career in the future.

It is our objective to produce law graduates who have the competence, humanity and integrity to serve society. We wish you a challenging and rewarding journey in the School and beyond.
