Library

1. Is there a Library Orientation?
Yes. All students except Law students* must complete the following course: LIB001 - Library Research Skills 2016-17 [Login with your SMU ID and password only]. 

There are 3 Learning Activities (LA) to be completed:

  • LA1: Pre Survey [online] and Oh Crap! [elearning] [SMU ID and password required]
  • LA2: LibQuest [onsite in the library] [register online]
  • LA3: Refresh Activity [online]

* The Library Orientation for Law students (LLB + JD) is a required component of the LAW104 Legal Systems, Legal Methods and Analysis course.  Law students will access the Library training content via LIBLAW (LAW104) Legal Systems, Legal Methods and Analysis on eLearn (the online learning management system).  Law students will be contacted separately regarding the Library course.

2.Why do I need to complete LIB001 - Library Research Skills 2016-17?

Learning how to use the library’s resources and services will help you achieve academic success while at SMU and give you a head-start in your studies. At SMU you are required to become an independent learner and apply critical thinking skills.

3. Where can I learn more about the Library Orientation Programme?

In addition to information published on the library’s website, you will hear more during the Academic Briefing. Look out for emails from the library too!

4.Are the learning activities for LIB001 Library Research Skills 2016-17 compulsory?

Yes, please complete all the activities by Sunday 21 August 2016. The eLearn (online learning management system) tracks learners and upon completion it will appear in your CCA transcript.

5.How do I access the learning activities in the eLearn system?

You will need to login with your SMU ID and password only.

6.I am a Law Student; do I need to complete the Online Library Orientation Programme?

The Library Orientation for Law students is built into the LAW104 Legal Systems, Legal Methods and Analysis course. All Law students must complete it. It is a course requirement. Law students will be contacted separately regarding the Library course.

7. I have some questions about the Library Orientation Programme, who do I contact?

8. What is LibQuest?

LibQuest is a problem-based learning activity where you will participate through discovery how to use the physical and digital library. You will also get to meet and greet the library staff!

9. Is LibQuest Compulsory?

Yes. Please register for a session. Law students do not need to register for LibQuest.

10. Where do I register for LibQuest?
Register via LIB001 Library Research Skills 2016 - 17. Remember no shows deprives another student of a place. You are to ensure that there are no clashes with other events such as your school academic briefings, camps, etc. as there will be no swaps or make-up sessions.

Law students do not need to register for LibQuest.
11. By when should I complete the LIB001 Library Research Skills course?

Please complete the course and activities by Sunday 21 August 2016.

12. I have a clash with other matriculation activities e.g. Academic Briefing. What do I do?

It is important you choose a session/slot when you are available. LibQuest sessions coincide other events when you are required to be on campus to complete other activities.
