Orientation Programmes

1. What is Freshmen Orientation Camp?

The Freshmen Orientation is the only University-wide orientation programme organised by the SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA) for all freshmen. It is a three days experiential programme where freshmen are inducted into our SMU community and introduced to the University’s CIRCLE values.

2. Are the Freshmen programmes/camps compulsory for incoming undergraduate students?

Freshmen programmes/camps are organised annually by SMU seniors for the in-coming cohort. We highly encourage all matriculated students to attend the Freshmen Orientation.

Since the inception of SMU, the Freshmen Orientation Programme has been a traditional rite of passage for all SMU undergraduates. All freshmen attending the Programme are exposed to attributes such as teamwork, facilitation and leadership – all of which are important elements of classroom seminars, project work and CCA participation.

From 2013, as part of SMU’s vision to provide all students with a holistic education, the University launched the SMU LifeLessons – a values-based out-of-classroom education programme developed for the four-year undergraduate course at SMU.

The Freshmen Orientation Programme will be the first out-of-classroom experience for our incoming freshmen.

There are various CCA and school orientation camps, these are all optional.

4. When will the Freshmen Orientation Camp 2016 be held?
The dates for this year’s FOC are:

Run 1: 8 – 10 July 2016
Run 2: 18 – 20 July 2016
Run 3: 1 – 3 Aug 2016

We strongly urge all incoming freshmen to set aside either of these dates in your schedules, especially if you have plans to work or travel in July/Aug 2016, to attend one Run of the Freshmen Orientation Camp.
5. Whom should I inform if I am unable to attend any of the camps?

If you are unable to attend the Freshmen Orientation Camp for any reason, you will need to write in ahead of time to foc@sa.smu.edu.sg to request for an official exemption from the Freshmen Orientation Camp and attach soft copies of your supporting documents (e.g medical certificates, employment letter) along with your request.

All requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and exemptions will be granted by the relevant SMU staff-in-charge.
6. If I were to miss the Freshmen Orientation Camp due to unforeseen circumstances (eg. late matriculation into SMU) or legitimate reasons (eg. medical leave, work contracts), would I be entitled to a refund?
The fees for Freshmen Orientation Camp constitute a one-time, non-refundable fee under the Miscellaneous Fees payable by all matriculated, full-time SMU freshmen. The fees will go towards administrative purposes and we will not be able to provide a refund should you miss the Camps for any reasons.
7. Why is the SMU ICON International Students' Orientation Camp compulsory?

SMU ICON, together with the International Student Experience team, has put together this camp to better prepare students on academic, administrative and student life matters. The camp, which promises to be an exciting, fun-packed event, is designed to provide international and local freshmen an opportunity to bond with one another as well as with experienced seniors before school officially begins.
