Exemption

After matriculation, students may login to Student Portal OASIS (https://smu.sharepoint.com/sites/oasis) to refer to the guidelines:

Navigation Path: OASIS > Academic > Enrolment > Course Exemption

Students generally cannot be exempted from taking a course required by their programme. Under special circumstances, certain programmes may allow course exemptions. Such exemptions may be initiated by students on an individual basis or granted through prior arrangements with partner universities.

All student petitions for course exemptions are subject to approval from the Programme Director. Working experience is not an acceptable basis for course exemption. No students can be granted exemptions exceeding a third of the total course units required for the programme of study, rounded down to the nearest whole number. Unless otherwise advised, programme fees are also generally not adjusted if course exemptions are approved.

Petitions must be submitted to the Programme Director at least a month before the start of programme, together with the following supporting documents:

1. University transcripts demonstrating successful completion of the subject course(s)

2. Official description and syllabus for all subject courses

Note:

* MSE/MITB students are to check with their programme offices for advice whether they need to take a course in place of the exempted course.

*For JD students who have done LAW courses in their undergraduate studies with SMU from AY2014/15 onwards, please check with your programme office for advice on exemptions.
