Withdrawal

Students who are unable or do not wish to continue with their studies at the University may withdraw from the University. A formal withdrawal must be filed with the University.

Before Term Start

Please inform your respective Programme Office via email on your decision to withdraw. Kindly indicate your full name and application number in your email.

After Term Start

The duly completed Withdrawal Form should be scan and send via email to your programme office.

For more information & guidelines, please login to the student portal OASIS > Home > Finance & Admin > Absence & Withdrawal > File a Withdrawal.

Students are discouraged from withdrawing once they have matriculated. They are strongly encouraged to consult closely with the Programme Director to review other options prior to withdrawing from the University.  If a decision is made to withdraw, students are to file the withdrawal using the Withdrawal form and submit it to the programme office, failing which they will be considered to be absent for classes without valid reason and this may have adverse effect on their permanent academic records.

The effective date of an immediate withdrawal is the date of the receipt of the formal withdrawal letter/form. No courses or grades for that term will appear on the record of the student, if the withdrawal takes place before the University final examination. Grade(s) for the registered course(s) will be recorded and reflected in the transcript, if the withdrawal takes place after the University final examination has begun.

Student must clear all outstanding matters, such as financial and administrative holds, library loans and remove installed software (provided by SMU on the student's laptop), and return student ID card, before withdrawal is completed and any due refund, if applicable, is processed. The student's candidacy will be terminated once withdrawal is processed.

International students are also required to return the Student’s Pass (green card) to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority within 7 days upon withdrawal from the University.

The university also reserves the right to initiate withdrawal in any of the following cases:

  • A student who misses classes without valid reason for an extended period of 3 class meetings or longer within a term can be deemed to have withdrawn from the university.
  • A student who has not completed the coursework requirements and is not on approved leave of absence will be deemed to have withdrawn from the university, if there are no courses enrolled after the third week of the term.

For more information regarding fee refunds for term-based / instalment-based tuition fee payments (excluding any non-refundable deposits), please refer to the student portal as per indicated above.
