- Translate unique backgrounds into confidence and career opportunities.
Get READy, Write Now! (2 days)
To succeed in your first year, you will need to be able to read critically and write effectively. This is especially true in your Core Curriculum modules such as Writing and Reasoning, and Big Questions. Join us for this workshop and learn how to:
- Formulate a Clear Argument
- Evaluate Secondary Sources
- Create Coherent Written Pieces
- Use Appropriate Referencing Conventions

Write Ahead
6 - 10 July 2026
Write Ahead is a one-week writing module created specifically for freshmen of Elevate@SMU. This immersive experience is dedicated to honing writing proficiency and fostering effective communication in academic and professional contexts.
Throughout the week-long course, participants will engage in activities and discussions that will help them learn to adapt their writing to diverse contexts and audiences. From understanding the precise purposes of different forms of communication, including how to inform, persuade and engage, and choosing appropriate structures, to crafting clear, concise, and coherent compositions, the module is crafted to empower learners with essential writing tools for success at SMU.
The supportive learning environment, personalized guidance, and hands-on activities will enable learners to explore the nuances of effective communication, and embrace the art of conveying ideas with clarity and impact.
Note: Students of Elevate@SMU are to attend Freshmen Orientation Run 2 or 3.

Pre-Statistics
(This eLearn course has to be completed by 13 August 2026)
This course helps students learn key statistical skills, including probability, Bayes’ Theorem, hypothesis testing, and distributions such as binomial, Poisson, and normal. Students will learn how to analyse data, understand results, and use concepts like standard deviation in real-life situations. The course builds a basic foundation in statistics and helps students feel more confident in making data-driven decisions.
The programme includes weekly consultation sessions with Professor Liu Peng from 20 July – 14 August 2026 to support your learning. These consultations will be aligned with the learning materials, providing an opportunity to clarify concepts, address challenges, and reinforce key topics covered in the course. Students are required to attend at least one consultation session.
To maximize your learning experience, students are strongly encouraged to complete the course by August and take advantage of these free consultations.
