Academic Matters

Register for Courses

At SMU, courses are mostly pre-assigned to postgraduate students except for selected open courses or electives which may require self-registration.

For programmes under the Common Academic Calendar, the tentative period for self-registration of open courses and electives is from 1 August to 15 August 2025 (subject to changes) on a first-come-first-serve basis. More information will be released nearer the date.

For programmes that are not under the Common Academic Calendar, the respective Programme Office will be in touch with you regarding the dates of self-registration of courses (if applicable).

Before your orientation, you will receive email notification on how to complete these self-paced modules in eLearn within the first month of the term:

Login to eLearn Portal to complete mandatory online Library Research Skills Consisting of 2 parts: “Avoiding Plagiarism Through the APA Style” and “The Research Process”

Login to eLearn Portal to complete the SMU Code of Student Conduct.

The Code of Student Conduct serves to guide students’ conduct in both the academic and non-academic aspects of their University life by providing an overview of the behaviour generally expected of them as a member of the University community. It is mandatory for every student to read and acknowledge the document. For more information about disciplinary procedures, you may refer to the student portal OASIS, Student Disciplinary Code and Procedure.

Prior to Start of Term

Verification of Academic Documents (Compulsory)

All matriculated students are required to complete the verification of their Bachelor's degree certificate(s) within the first term of study. Detailed instructions will be sent to your SMU email account after the start of the term.

In the meantime, you may begin preparing the relevant documents based on the institution from which you obtained your degree:

If you hold a Bachelor's degree fromType of document to get ready
A Singapore Autonomous university
(e.g. NUS, NTU, SMU, SIT and SUSS)
OpenCerts
A university in Mainland China

CHSI-verifiable certificate

If your CHSI certificate has expired, please request a new one.

A university in Australia or New Zealand
(including SG campuses)
A secure link where your degree can be verified via My eQuals
All other universitiesA PDF of your degree certificate

Note:

If you are currently employed full-time in Singapore and hold an Employment Pass, you may be exempted from this verification process. Further details will be provided via SMU email after the start of the term.

Student Portal OASIS

OASIS (https://smu.sharepoint.com/sites/oasis) stands for On-Line Access to Student Information System and hosts various self-service services under different categories such as Academic, Finance & Admin, Campus Life & Exchange, Careers & Community Service. Only students who have matriculated and activated their SMU Computer Account can access OASIS.

You are strongly advised to log in to OASIS regularly so that you do not miss out on the important announcements and services throughout your study life.
