Dear Freshmen
SMU CORE CURRICULUM: COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMME
Welcome to SMU and greetings from the Centre for Social Responsibility (C4SR)! Our heartiest congratulations on your acceptance to SMU!
Community Service Graduation Requirement
Community Service has been an integral part of SMU’s DNA since our university’s inception in 2000 and is a graduation requirement under the Communities pillar of the SMU Core Curriculum.
All students will be awarded one course unit (1 CU) excluding students in the Bachelor of Laws programme, upon successful completion of the Community Service requirements. For students in the Bachelor of Laws programme, Community Service is a non-credit bearing graduation requirement.
Every student is required to complete a minimum of 80 hours in community service. Before you embark on your community service efforts, you have to complete five mandatory online units: one Reflective Practice Unit (RPU) and four Community Service Units (CSUs). The RPU will equip you with skills for deeper and more meaningful reflection, while the CSUs will introduce you to community service guiding principles and tools such as service learning, needs analysis, asset mapping and sustainability. These units will help you better understand and apply your learning so as to provide more impactful and sustainable service to the community.
Please login to SMU’s eLearn portal at https://elearn.smu.edu.sg/ from 4 June 2024 onwards to complete the RPU and CSUs. All students are required to complete these online units within their first Academic Year. Do plan and complete these units early, so that you may proceed to apply for your community service projects.
If you have problems accessing eLearn, please email to elearn@smu.edu.sg for assistance.
Please ensure that you seek the University’s approval via OnTRAC before starting on any Community Service Project. For more information on the CS procedures and guidelines, refer to the e-Guidebook available on eLearn together with the CSUs. Do note that no backdating will be allowed.
In conjunction with Matriculation and to help you embark on your CS journey, C4SR is pleased to bring you a selection of CS projects, planned exclusively for you by your seniors before the start of the academic term.
For more information on these projects, you can contact the respective Project HR Director. Indicate your interest by signing up quickly via the webform link https://forms.office.com/r/eNf79U2278. You can only sign up for ONE project by 31 July 2024.
Besides these projects, do keep a lookout for other projects organised by your seniors. You can also volunteer individually in a cause you are passionate about, with a registered non-profit/community organisation or social service agency or social enterprise near your home.
