Dear BAcc Students,
Congratulations on being accepted into the Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) programme at Singapore Management University. You have made an important decision about your education and your future career. We are glad to be a part of your life from now on.
We live in exciting times. The accounting industry is rapidly transforming, with analytics, automation and accounting data becoming increasingly integral to the business strategies of corporations and accounting firms. Our aim at the SMU School of Accountancy (SoA) is to develop versatile accounting professionals and business leaders who are fluent in accounting data and analytics applications; capable of communicating analyses effectively and equipped with sound accounting knowledge to make good judgement and recommendations. Our Second Majors are designed to groom our students to excel in high-growth areas in the accounting industry. The Second Major in Accounting Data & Analytics features data technology and accounting applications courses that are developed in line with industry needs. The Second Major in Financial Forensics will equip students with the required knowledge and skills to detect and prevent fraud – an important competency in today’s business environment.
The job market in Singapore and around the world has grown increasingly volatile. Graduates entering the job market need to be ready to face new challenges. They must have the right training, mindset and motivation to adapt and learn new skills. At SMU, we equip you to do that. Our well-rounded curriculum and unique teaching pedagogy are aimed towards producing graduates who are confident, articulate, technically proficient, creative and analytical. Our Work-Study Elective programmes with industry partners (including KPMG, EY, PwC, Deloitte, GIC and OCBC Bank) provide opportunities for students to experience classroom-learning interlaced with structured on-the-job training, laying the foundation for students to perform higher-level work when they join the accounting profession.
The SMU BAcc programme is accredited and endorsed by 10 educational accreditation and professional industry bodies, such as the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), AACSB International (AACSB) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). These professional accountancy accreditations mean our graduates have satisfied the entry requirement for membership in the professional bodies.
Our faculty comes from prestigious backgrounds with impeccable research and teaching credentials. Complementing them is our pool of adjunct staff, some of whom are partners from the Big 4 and other leading accounting firms. You will have a closer relationship with your professors with the relatively small class size. There will be ample opportunities, in class and outside, to tap on their wealth of knowledge and experience.
Our collaborations with over 200 partner universities around the world mean that you can choose to spend a term at overseas universities. The prospects of broadening your outlook and studying abroad are plentiful.
Come experience all of these for yourself and be transformed in the process. The vibrant student life is something which you cannot miss. Take the chance to start a co-curricular activity (CCA) club or better still, join the Accounting Society, Tax Society or SoA Outreach. This is where BAcc students from all levels learn, work and play together. Challenge yourself and extend the boundaries of your potential with the School of Accountancy. You will find the experience at SMU an enriching one.
Once again, let me welcome you to the Bachelor of Accountancy programme at Singapore Management University.
